"Dr. Gist, how are TMJ disorders caused?" When
muscles and joints do not work properly, the muscles will often go into
a spasm (cramp). The spasm can become part of a cycle that results in
tissue damage, pain, muscle tenderness and more spasm.Although accidents involving injuries to the jaw, head, or neck, or diseases such as arthritis may result in some TMJ problems, factors relating to the teeth and bite are also believed to cause TMJ disorders. Oral habits such as clenching the teeth or grinding the teeth (bruxism) may develop as a response to stress. You may not even realize that you clench or grind your teeth and may do this during your sleep. These habits can tire the muscles and causes them to go into a spasm. The spasm causes pain which in turn causes more spasm. The end result of this cycle may eventually be a TMJ disorder. Improper alignment of the teeth may result in problems related to biting and chewing. Misaligned teeth can place the chewing muscles under stress and cause them to go into spasm, thus setting off the painful and harmful cycle described above. |
